Terms of Use

These conditions govern access to Iowa Criminal History. Visiting a page, reading its content, or submitting a query through a search feature signifies agreement to all terms below. Anyone who does not agree must stop using the website.

NO FCRA USE. Iowa Criminal History is privately owned and has no affiliation with an Iowa, local, or federal government body. Neither the website nor its advertising partners offers a service for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance eligibility decisions, or any other purpose governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The site is a reference for locating Iowa criminal-record resources. It is neither a private investigation firm nor a consumer reporting agency.

1. What This Website Is

Iowa Criminal History is a private reference site with no government connection. It does not keep official criminal records, retrieve government files, conduct official record checks, or submit documents for visitors.

Its content identifies Iowa DCI, Iowa Courts Online, the Iowa Department of Corrections, the Iowa Sex Offender Registry, and custodians throughout Iowa's 99 counties. Iowa Code chapter 22 governs access to nonconfidential records held by Iowa public bodies, while chapter 692 controls dissemination and subject review of Iowa criminal-history data. Outside research tools may also appear on the site.

2. Rules for Using This Site

As a condition of use, you must not:

  • Interfere with the website or prevent others from using it
  • Deploy a bot, scraper, or other automated collection tool against the pages
  • Attempt unauthorized entry into any system or account
  • Use site content for a hiring, housing, credit, or insurance decision
  • Stalk, threaten, or harass a person with information found here
  • Violate any applicable local, Iowa, or federal law

3. No Harassment, Stalking, or Discrimination

No one may use information from Iowa Criminal History or a linked tool to intimidate, threaten, stalk, harass, or discriminate against another person. Such conduct can also violate criminal law. The Iowa Sex Offender Registry warns against using registry data for threats, vandalism, stalking, assault, or vigilante action. Iowa Code chapter 692A defines what registry information may be made public. That information exists for community awareness and must not be used to blacklist a person from work or housing.

4. We Are Not a Consumer Reporting Agency

Iowa Criminal History is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA and produces no credit report, background check, or consumer report. Its advertising partners likewise are not presented as services for evaluating applicants, renters, insurance risk, or credit. You may not use data from the website or a linked tool to:

  • Make any other decision regulated by the FCRA
  • Set an insurance premium or judge creditworthiness
  • Determine eligibility for a license, permit, or government program
  • Evaluate a housing or rental applicant
  • Make a hiring or termination decision

A legally permitted background check for one of those purposes must be obtained from Iowa DCI when its statutory channel applies or from a screening provider that complies with the FCRA.

5. No Legal Advice

Site content is general information, not legal advice. It cannot determine how an Iowa charge, conviction, warrant, or expungement law affects a particular case. Seek advice from an attorney licensed in Iowa for that analysis.

6. No Warranties

All content and services are supplied "as is." Iowa Criminal History makes no guarantee that:

  • A partner search result will be complete or correct
  • A page will be free from bugs, mistakes, or security weaknesses
  • The website will remain available without interruption
  • Any information is complete, accurate, or current at a particular time

Iowa criminal records can change when charges are filed, amended, dismissed, sealed, or expunged. Updates may not be reflected immediately. No content on Iowa Criminal History is an official statement from Iowa DCI, a court, a sheriff, or another public agency.

7. Third-Party Services and Links

Links lead to Iowa agencies, court portals, county sheriffs and clerks, legal-aid organizations, and outside search services. Following a link opens a service Iowa Criminal History does not control. The site is not responsible for that service's availability, prices, privacy practices, terms, or content. Review the destination's rules before using it.

8. Intellectual Property

Text, code, logos, and graphics are owned by Iowa Criminal History or its content partners. They may not be copied, changed, distributed, or used to create another work without prior written permission.

9. Limits on Our Liability

To the maximum extent allowed by law, Iowa Criminal History is not liable for damage arising from website use, including reliance on content found here or through an outside service.

10. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold Iowa Criminal History harmless from a demand, claim, or legal action caused by your site use or violation of these terms, including related costs and legal fees.

11. Governing Law

Iowa law governs these terms. Any dispute tied to use of Iowa Criminal History must be brought in a court located in Iowa.

12. Changes to These Terms

Iowa Criminal History may revise these terms. A revised version becomes effective when it is posted on this page.

13. Cutting Off Access

Access may be restricted or terminated at any time, for any reason, and without advance notice.

14. Severability

If a court finds one provision invalid or unenforceable, all remaining provisions continue in effect. The affected term will be modified only to the extent needed to make it enforceable.

15. Questions

Questions about these conditions may be submitted through the Contact page.
